With the beginning of the Meiji period (1868), the system of political leadership was changed. The shogun in the position of chancellor transferred power back to the emperor (tenno). As a consequence, the samurai lost their influence (and employment). Therefore, the last shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu ordered his samurai to exchange the sword for the plough. Tea and silk became Japan's main exports, and the port of Shimizu in Shizuoka was opened. The cultivation of tea grew rapidly and huge tea gardens were established, not least with the energetic support and great toil of the unemployed samurai.
This is the historical background of the tea-growing region of Enshu, from which this first-class Sencha originates. Today, Enshu's tea gardens stretch to the horizon as far as the eye can see.
Enjoy Enshu, the tea from the gardens of Japan's last shogun. It will delight you with its smooth taste and delicate green cup, followed by a surprising depth of flavour in the finish.
