The Takeno Jôô Matcha is an exceptionally high quality, produced annually in very limited quantities. The current harvest started around the end of April. It takes several weeks until the harvest and the processing are completed, because the complete processing is done by hand. This year, the quantity of Matcha produced was less than 2 kilograms for the entire world market.
Takeno Jôô Uji Matcha is regarded as Japan's finest Matcha, cultivated and processed in a 100% traditional way. It comes from Uji, the only historically recognized place in Japan for "true tea" and is produced without any use of agricultural chemicals. The leaves are entirely hand-picked.
In contrast to its "little brother", the Shirasagi Uji Matcha and the Hanomi Uji Matcha, the complete processing of the Takeno Jôô Uji Matcha, from harvest to packaging, takes place completely and exclusively by hand!
The tea garden is about 1.25 ha in size and is located in Uji Prefecture. The Nakanishi family has been growing organic tea there since 1980. "100% traditional cultivation and processing at the highest level" means that the tea garden of the Nakanishi family is completely covered with black nets, under which the tea bushes grow high. Once a year about 30 helpers come into the garden to harvest the tea - exclusively by hand!
The leaves are carefully processed into Tencha and then carefully ground in a stone mill. Takeno Jôô Uji Matcha is the most outstanding variety of the Nakanishi family's garden, for which only the sweetest shrub variety of the family with the fullest umami is harvested.
This outstanding Matcha quality is named after the tea master Takeno Jôô (1502-1555), whose style of luxurious simplicity was coined by his teacher Murata Juko ("It is good to tie a noble horse to a straw hut"). This saying also adorns the can of this incomparable Matcha. Takeno Jôôô is one of Japan's most famous tea masters. He formulated the Wabi concept with the words: "Honesty, reason and self-control, both emotional and material," and introduced the value of simplicity to the Japanese tea ceremony.
Taste
Intense and bright green in the skin, the taste of this Matcha is at first excitingly fruity, it lacks any astringency. In the aftertaste the Matcha develops a soft and creamy, almost sweet aftertaste on the palate.
